Lacerations
Houston Laceration Treatment
WHEN DO I NEED TO SEEK TREATMENT FOR A CUT?
When in doubt, it’s always a good idea to have a doctor examine a laceration. To help patients make an educated decision, we’d like to offer some general information on lacerations and treatment.
ABOUT LACERATIONS
Most lacerations will benefit from being closed, whether with suture, skin adhesive, or a special type of skin tape called steri-strips.
The reasons for closing lacerations, either by suturing them, applying steri-strips, or using tissue glue, are:
- To restore appearance. If the wound is in a cosmetically significant area like the face, then it is more important to carefully approximate the wound edges to create the best possible result.
- To restore function. If deeper structures like tendons or muscle are cut, then permanent disability can result unless an appropriate repair is performed. Sometimes a wound on the hand that is not repaired properly can cause scarring that may affect the use of the hand.
- To stop bleeding. Always apply direct pressure to bleeding wounds, preferably with gauze and a finger rather than a tight circumferential bandage, but if the bleeding persists then the wound may need to be closed.
- To prevent infection. Lacerations need to be thoroughly cleaned, which sometimes is best done under local anesthesia. A nicely closed wound will heal much faster than a wound that is left open, and the risk of infection is lessened.
Here are some other general guidelines for lacerations:
- All puncture wounds should be evaluated by a physician because they tend to get infected.
- Wounds that are contaminated with dirt or debris should be evaluated by a physician.
- Wounds that possibly contain foreign material (like splinters or broken glass) should be evaluated by a physician. Foreign bodies left in a wound can cause persistent pain and increase the chance of infection.
It’s important to remember that if you haven’t had a tetanus shot within the past five years, then you should visit a doctor for an updated tetanus immunization, particularly if the wound was dirty.

I was received by a friendly yet professional employee, who helped me fill out all the required information. Then the test for Covid was done with utmost gentleness. I really thought it was going to be a nightmare from what I hear from people, but it was painless and almost no discomfort at all. The staff was all friendly and helpful, the facility clean and sterilized and the doctor was thorough. My loudest shout out goes to the nurse who walked me through the process and gave me great advice. Thank you. I recommend this clinic to all my friends and family.

Patient
Thank you for taking such great care of me on my recent visit. I have never been to the emergency room for pain. It was scary. I probably wasn’t the easiest patient yet felt well cared for and nobody made me feel like a crazy lady for showing up in the middle of the night in my PJs and robe. Hopefully, I do not have to do such a thing again but if so I’ll be more comfortable knowing that I’ll be in good hands.

I had a great experience. From when you walk in they are extremely welcoming and friendly. I went in with intense pain and they did everything to make me feel comfortable and find a solution. I had an amazing nurse named Moses who was extremely kind and helpful. The doctor was quick to respond, very kind and informative This is by far the best experience I've encountered. I went in today for a bad migraine. It was around 6:30 am and no other patients. I was greeted and taken back. They got me started on some meds. The dr came in and was friendly and quick. He didn't ask me 100 questions to get to the point. He gave me something to relieve the problem and a prescription. I didn't have to ask for a work note he automatically wrote one out. The staff was very clear on instructions and what they were going to do. Felt better, checked out, and paid. It was fast and convenient since my dr doesn't open till 8 and hope to get in the same day. I'd go back. The staff asked the main questions needed, Before giving me meds asked if I had a ride or by myself. which makes a huge difference with migraine medicine. In and out in 2 hours.
IT WAS FAST & CONVENIENT
